Multi-coloured Combustion - Science At The Key
At the end of last term, as part of their topic on combustion, Key Stage 3 pupils carried out some practicals focusing on fireworks. Each pupil had a series of different metal salts that they had to test by carrying out various flame tests. Pupils were assessed in setting up a Bunsen burner, ensuring that they followed proper safety procedures and were then guided through how to carry out a flame test using a wet splint and powdered metal salts.
As you can see from the photos, a variety of different colours was produced, enabling pupils to identify which metal salt would be used to make which colour of firework. They also attempted creating their own, homemade sparklers. A fun way to end the term that was enjoyed by all!
