Lessons From WWII - English At The Key Havant
This term, at our Havant site, Year 11 pupils have been preparing for their GCSE English Language exams by studying The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. They have explored the book's social and historical context and will go on to consider the way the author portrays the characters and uses language to engage the reader and create tension.
The novel is set during World War II and tells the story of Bruno, an 8-year-old boy whose father becomes the commandant of a concentration camp. Unhappy and lonely in his new house near the camp, he wanders around his surroundings one day and finds Shmuel, a Jewish boy of his age. Though the barbed-wire fence of the camp separates them, the boys begin a forbidden friendship, oblivious to the real nature of the world around them.
The book stirs emotions and encourages readers to draw many parallels with events taking place around the world today. Our pupils are completely engrossed in it.
