Lambs, Oranges & History Boys - English At The Key

7 Oct 2018

In our English lessons, we've had a fantastic start to the new year with lots of hard work, rich discussion and focused reading. Pink group have been studying Lamb To The Slaughter by Roald Dahl. The short story has an interesting twist and the pupils have been focusing on writing in the voice of the main character. They’ve also been thinking about writing in certain styles and learning how to set out an informal letter. We’ve just started a new short story called Hey You Down There by Harold Rolseth. The pupils are using evidence from the text to make predictions and consider the context of the story.

Yellow group have been focusing on The History Boys, a play by Alan Bennett. The pupils have been studying the historical context of the play and the plot and characters. This is a GCSE text so pupils have to push themselves even harder to achieve the most they can each lesson. The pupils have been learning about the themes within the play. One of the main themes is education and they’ve been interested to learn about the changes implemented by Thatcher’s government during the 1980s. We’ve also been using the wonderful Mr Bruff videos on YouTube to help us with our learning. Mr Bruff is a fantastic English teacher who creates revision aids and short lessons for YouTube which all pupils can access.

Blue group have been focusing on the theme of Crime & Madness and have been reading extracts from American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis; a very controversial text! They’re also going to read an extract from A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess and discuss the text's ideas surrounding criminal behaviour. The pupils have been improving their creative writing skills in preparation for their GCSE examination in English Language.

Finally, I am pleased to report that many of our pupils have sat the Functional Skills tests in English. Well done to all of them: they’ve made me very proud!
